1. Introduction 1.1. Abrikosov's prediction of the Flux-Line Lattice Numerous metals, alloys, and compounds become superconducting when they are cooled below a transition temperature Tc . This critical temperature ranges from Tc 1 K for Al, Zn, Ti, U, W and Tc 4.15 K for Hg the superconductor discovered first, Kamerlingh Onnes 1911 ; , over Tc 9.2 K for Nb the elemental metal with the highest Tc ; and Tc 23 K for Nb3 Ge the highest value from 1973 to 1986, see the overview by Hulm and Matthias 1980 ; to the large Tc values of the high-Tc superconductors HTSC's ; discovered by Bednorz and Mller 1986 ; , e.g. YBa2 Cu3 O7- YBCO, 1, Wu et al. 1987 ; with Tc 92.5 K and u Bi2 Sr2 Ca2 Cu3 O10 + BSCCO ; with Tc 120 K, and Hg-compounds which under pressure have reached Tc 164 K Gao et al. 1994, Kim, Thompson et al. 1995 ; . The superconducting state is characterized by the vanishing electric resistivity T ; of the material and by the complete expulsion of magnetic flux, irrespective of whether the magnetic field Ba was applied before or after cooling the superconductor below Tc Meissner and Ochsenfeld 1933 ; . The existence of this Meissner effect proves that the superconducting state is a thermodynamic state, which uniquely depends on the applied field and temperature but not on previous history. As opposed to this, an ideal conductor expels the magnetic flux of a suddenly switched on field Ba but also "freezes" in its interior the magnetic flux which has been there before the conductivity became ideal. It was soon realized that some superconductors do not exhibit expulsion of flux, but the applied field partly penetrates and the magnetization of the specimen depends on the magnetic history in a complicated way. Early theories tried to explain this by a "spongelike" nature of the material, which could trap flux in microscopic current loops that may become normal conducting when the circulating current exceeds some critical value. The true explanation of partial flux penetration was given in a pioneering work by Abrikosov 1957 ; . Alexei Abrikosov, then a student of Lew Landau in Moscow, discovered a periodic solution of the phenomenological theory of superconductivity conceived a few years earlier by Ginzburg and Landau GL ; 1950 ; . Abrikosov interpreted his solution as a lattice of parallel flux lines, now also called flux tubes, fluxons, or Abrikosov vortex lines, figure 1. These flux lines thread the specimen, each carrying a quantum of magnetic flux 0 h 2e 2.07 10-15 Tm2 . At the centre of a flux line the superconducting order parameter r ; the complex GL function ; vanishes. The line 0 is surrounded by a tube of radius , the vortex core, within which || is suppressed from its superconducting value || 1 that it attains in the Meissner state, figure 2. The vortex core is surrounded by a circulating supercurrent J r ; which generates the magnetic field B r ; of the flux line. In bulk specimens the vortex current and field are confined to a flux tube of radius ; at large distances r , current and field of an isolated vortex decay as exp -r ; . In thin films of thickness d , the current and magnetic field of a vortex extend to the larger distance film 22 d, the circulating current and the parallel field at large distances r film decrease only as 1 r and the perpendicular field as 1 r and the vortex core has a larger radius 12film 2 ; 1 3 Pearl 1964, 1966, Fetter and Hohenberg 1967 ; . The coherence length and magnetic penetration depth of the GL theory depend on the temperature T and diverge at Tc as.

Like rheumatoid arthritis RA ; , psoriatic arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints and connective tissue. The disease causes joint pain and swelling that can lead to crippling along with inflamed and irritated scaly red patches of skin throughout the body. It is a progressive and debilitating disease and because there are no treatments specifically approved for psoriatic arthritis, doctors often use therapies approved for RA, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs ; and disease modifying antirheumatic drugs DMARDs ; . However, no DMARDs are currently approved for use in psoriatic arthritis. There are approximately 300, 000 patients with psoriatic arthritis in the United States and the disease affects both men and women most commonly between the ages 30 and 50. Psoriatic arthritis patients are generally treated by rheumatologists and dermatologists.

A 22-year-old man presented to the ER, complaining of depression. Two hours ago, he had been at a bar, drinking with his buddies, ogling the ladies. All was well until he asked a woman to dance with him, and she turned him down. Most men would accept such a minor setback with equanimity, but this rejection threw this fellow into a vortex of despair. Did he get drunk? No. Did he ask someone else to dance? No. Did he seek solace from his friends? No. Did he scan the personal want ads? No. Did he head for the gym to work off his tension? No. Did he peruse his little black book, searching for someone more receptive? No. Instead, he came to the ER, expecting me to provide him with a solution to his libidinous desires. This pathetically execrable excuse for a man was blasted with both barrels of stinging, yet apropos advice. First, I explained that to come to the ER for such a problem was, basically, idiotic. Consoling the lovelorn was never something I considered to be within the province of emergency medicine. This character was--surprise!--on welfare, and the bill for this "emergency" was footed by you, me, and other U.S. taxpayers. Second, even though I was horrified by the thought of anything that might increase the reproductive success of such a person, I decided to give him some practical advice. I nixed his suggestion that a psychiatrist might be able to help him get a date, explaining that shrinks are not magicians. Noting that he had never worked a day in his life, I said that women generally prefer employed men. He seemed to be mystified by this concept, retorting that he did have income: the government sent him a check every month! How impressive! A job, I explained, generally supplies a valuable sense of self-worth, in addition to providing respectable income. Since there was no reason why this fellow could not work, I felt that his welfare money was morally tainted and incapable of imparting self-esteem. He felt that money is money, no matter where--or from whom--it comes from.

Review Human Herpes Virus 6 HHV-6 ; is a common cause of childhood infection leading to a red rash and fever in some cases. Most people however are asymptomatic and have no symptoms. After this initial infection, the virus goes "underground" in the body and can resurface later in life. It is not currently known how or when this reactivation can occur. Previous researchers have claimed that HHV-6 could be detected in high percentages of MS patients compared to non-MS individuals. As discussed in the last newsletter, this detection most often means that a person has been infected at some point during their life. It does not necessarily mean that they are currently experiencing an active "flare up" of the infection. We therefore have collected blood many times from each individual in the study to try to link active infections with MS flare ups. Current Study We have now analyzed blood samples from approximately 125 individuals with MS. We have not detected HHV-6 from anyone. Given our results, it seems clear that this virus is not a major cause of MS. This does not mean that all cases aren't a result of HHV-6 infection. HHV-6 may be a trigger for disease in some cases. More research will need to be done to determine how frequently this occurs and if antiherpetic drugs are warranted in this small number of people and abraxane.

Isthmus to expose the ciliated epithelium and cut into small pieces and placed in a vial containing the extraction media. Procedure I When basal bodies with cilia attached are to be isolated, the extraction solution should consist of 0 .25 M sucrose, 0 .02 M Hepes pH 7 .5, 0 .001 M EDTA, 0 .025 M KC1, and 0 .05% Triton X-100 Rohm and Haas Co ., Philadelphia, Pa . ; . The vials are agitated for 2 min on a Vortex mixer Scientific Industries, Inc ., Queens Village, N . Y. ; every 5 min for 30 min . The tissue is removed from the vial and the solution is centrifuged at 600 g for 10 min . The pellet contains basal bodies with cilia, nuclei, and a little adherent cytoplasm . Procedure II When unciliated basal bodies are to be isolated, the oviduct must be exposed to conditions which will remove the cilia from the cell . The pieces of oviduct are placed in a media composed of 0 .25 M sucrose, 0 .02 A1 Pipes pH 5 0 .02 M CaC12, and 0 .05% Triton X-100 . The vials are agitated continuously for 15 min . The cilia can be collected if the solution is centrifuged at 20, 000 g for 30 min. After the deciliation process, the basal bodies are isolated by the same process as in procedure I . To partially purify the basal bodies or basal bodies with cilia attached, the 600-g pellet is resuspended in 3 ml sucrose buffered with 0 .02 M Hepes pH 6 .5. This mixture is placed in a 5-ml centrifuge tube, and a solution of 0 .25 M sucrose, 0 .02 M Hepes pH 6 .5, 0 .01 M CaC12, and 0 .025 ?M KCl is layered over the sucrose to fill the tube, which is then centrifuged at 40, 000 g for 1 .5 h Under these conditions, the nuclei form a pellet and the cortices which contain the basal bodies collect at the interface of the two solutions . The purified cortices are collected and centrifuged at 600g for 10 min . Approximately 5-7 mg dry weight of unciliated cortices per gram wet weight of oviduct can be isolated with this technique . For transmission electron microscopy procedures, the pellets were fixed in 0 .02 M collidine, 0 .05 M Hepes buffered 0 .38% glutaraldehyde pH 7 .2 for 10 min . After being washed in 1 % Na cacodylate, the pellets were postfixed with 1 % osmium tetroxide and embedded in Araldite Ciba Products Co ., Summit, N . J . ; Sections were cut on a Porter-Blum MT-2B and viewed with a Philips 200 electron microscope . The fixation procedure was the same for scanning electron microscopy, except that the fixed specimens were then dehydrated in ethanol and passed through various concentrations of Freon TF E . Pont de Nemours of Co ., Inc ., Wilmington, Del . ; and finally into pure Freon. They were then critically point dried and acamprosate.

The dynamics more specifically, stability ; of infinite sequences of such vortex pairs that initially have the form of a Karman street in a jet-type shear flow is investigated Such a geometry is most directly related to the wake behind a streamlined cylinder We assume that the characteristic scale of velocity variation in a shear flow is much larger than the sizes of vortex spots. This means that each vortex spot during its evolution is always in a flow with an almost linear velocity distribution and first of all undergoes general drift and weak primarily elliptic due to its linear profile of the flow velocity ; deformation of its shape. In this formulation the problem can be solved using a previously developed perturbation theory for hydrodynamic vortices. It is shown that variations of the parameters of the chess structure and the value of the velocity of the jet are interdependent. For instance, at short times when the jet velocity is relative large , all vortices remain almost on the same line while in the late wake, when the jet slows down, the vortices form the chess structure. Such vortex sheets were indeed observed in [[ Spedding G. R., Browand F. K., Fincham A. M. Turbulence, similarity scaling and vortex geometry in the wake of a towed sphere in a stably stratified fluid. J. Fluid Mech., 1996, v.31410]. Note that possible initial, short-lived large-scale perturbations were not realised under the experimental conditions of. , presumably because of the limited size of the tank. This in itself implies a concentration of flow in horizontal plane. Still, to make a positive conclusion, a more thorough analysis is needed including study of the effect of the vortex sheet onto the jet flow and acebutolol.
Contribution to the anisotropic penetration depth in YBCO and find excellent agreement. 9.7. Flux creep and activation energy The decay of screening currents, or of the magnetization, in principle is completely determined by the geometry and by the resistivity T, B, J ; . In superconducting rings and hollow cylinders in axially oriented magnetic field one simply has M J T, B, J ; Within the Kim-Anderson model 9.3 ; the decay of persistent currents in this geometry was calculated analytically for all times Zhukov 1992, Schnack et al. 1992 ; . Twelve decades of the electric field E 10-13 to 10-1 V m were measured by Sandvold and Rossel 1992 ; combining currentvoltage curves with highly sensitive measurements of decaying currents in rings of YBCO films of 3 mm diameter, 0.1 mm width, and 200 nm thickness. In a nice work Kunchur et al. 1990 ; show that by the superposition of decaying flux distributions, usual flux creep can lead to a memory effect, which had been observed by Rossel et al. 1989 ; but then was interpreted as glass-like behaviour. Dislocation-mediated "plastic" ; flux creep is considered by van der Beek and Kes 1991a ; , and Mee at al. 1991 ; investigate creep in a granular HTSC with a distribution of coupling strengths. The current dependent activation energy U J ; may be extracted from creep experiments by the method of Maley et al. 1990 ; , figure 28, see e.g. van der Beek et al. 1992a ; , Kung et al. 1993 ; , Sengupta et al. 1993 ; , and Rui et al. 1995 ; for a Hg-based HTSC ; . The Kim-Anderson model 9.3 ; originally means an effective activation energy Jc - J, cf. equation 9.4b ; , and actually corresponds to a zig-zag shaped pinning potential, which has a barrier height proportional to the current-caused tilt of the total potential. As shown by Beasley et al. 1969 ; , a more realistic rounded potential yields U Jc - J ; Collective creep theory yields U 1 J with 0 depending on B and on the pinning strength. For single-vortex pinning one predicts 1 7; crosses over from 5 2 to the vortex bundles increase from small a R , R intermediate a R R large R , R Lc ; size. Here R , R , and Lc denote the transverse or parallel to the flux motion ; and Lc the longitudinal to the field ; dimensions of the bundle section 8.7. ; , and a is the flux-line spacing Feigel'man et al. 1989, Nattermann 1990, Fischer and Nattermann 1991, Blatter et al. 1994a ; . For the more general uniaxial ; anisotropy situation, the result is more complicated and may be found in Blatter et al. 1994a ; . These various exponents are nicely seen in proton irradiated YBCO by Thompson et al. 1994 ; . Dekker et al. 1992a ; find 0.19 at low, and 0.94 at high current densities. Many experiments suggest a logarithmic dependence U ln J2 Ries et al. 1993 ; , corresponding to the limit 0 or to logarithmic interaction between flux lines Zeldov et al. 1990 ; or point vortices Zhukov et al. 1994 ; . For U ln J2 the creep rate can be calculated analytically Vinokur et al. 1991a ; and a power-law currentvoltage curve E J n holds which leads to the nonlinear diffusion equations 8.4a ; Rhyner 1993, Gilchrist and van der Beek 1994 ; and to self-organized criticality. Combining the collective creep result U J ; Uc for J Jc with the KimAnderson formula U J ; Uc for J Jc one obtains for the decaying current density in rings and cylinders the interpolation formula J t ; Jc.

There are many other analogies that have been analyzed in refs. 2 and 3. Other analyses of the equation are found in refs. 411. The question we are going to explore here is an analog of the vortex patch problem for 2D Euler equation, i.e. the evolution of a solution that consists of two regions, where the function takes the values 0 and 1, separated by a smooth curve see Fig. 1 ; . For 2D Euler the global regularity of the vortex patches has been proved by Chemin 12 ; . A simpler proof has been obtained by Bertozzi and Constantin 13 ; and Majda and Bertozzi 14 ; . See also refs. 15 and 16. We notice that the question we are addressing here is the local existence of a solution for the QG-vortex patch problem. Deciding whether there is global regularity of the solutions is a very interesting open problem and acitretin.

Discovery and Synthesis of AlimtaTM, a New and Broadly Effective Antitumor Agent, " Edward C. Taylor Princeton University ; , Princeton, NJ. As one of five presenters during a session titled "Drugs from Academia: Marketed Drugs Discovered in Academic Labs", Professor Edward Taylor provided a brief synopsis of the decades-long journey toward the discovery and development of an immensely successful chemotherapeutic treatment called AlimtaTM. In 1946, as Professor Taylor was beginning graduate school and looking into a topic for his dissertation, he came across the structure of pteroylglutamic acid, recently isolated from the liver, in an issue of Science and was intrigued by its bicyclic pterin ring system Figure 1 ; . At that time, this particular scaffold had only previously been found in pigments from butterfly wings. Subsequently, pteroylglutamic acid later called folic acid ; was found to be a vital component of every living organism and other researchers found that slight modifications to its structure could produce molecules exhibiting antibacterial activity.
